David Goldstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music education at CCNY in 1939 and a master's degree in composition from Columbia University. Later, he studied at the Long Island College of Medicine, finishing his training in pediatrics in 1953. From 1953 to 1980, he worked as a pediatrician for three days a week, while devoting the rest of his life to music., composing especially for the viol and the recorder. The American Recorder Society was founded in 1939 in New York City by Suzanne Bloch, Margaret Bradford, and Irmgard Lehrer. Its aim was to provide a meeting place for recorder players in order to stimulate and improve the appreciation and playing of recorder music. Eventually chapters were formed in other cities, and the Society began publishing editions of recorder music. Today, the headquarters of the Society is in Saint Louis, MO.
